Getting Started
Our work together goal-oriented and collaborative. Goals and a therapeutic plan will be created during our first few sessions together- though, as you grow and evolve, so might your goals. We will regularly check in to ensure our time together remains aligned with what matters most to you. Growth is hard, and sometimes difficult to recognize when you are in the thick of it. This is why it is important to me that both big and small steps towards change are celebrated throughout our time together.
The Work
I am an integrative therapist, who uses multiple different therapeutic modalities based on your specific needs and preferences. Below is information about the common modalities used in my practice. The heart of my practice, however, is identity-affirming, culturally responsive, and relationship-focused.
Trauma Informed Stabilization Treatment/Parts Work:
A therapeutic model for individuals with symptoms of trauma. The model focuses on exploring and gaining a more compassionate relationship with the parts of ourselves that have been impacted by trauma.
Somatic Trauma Processing:
A body-based therapy approach where the body is given an opportunity to discharge the physical responses to danger that become stuck during traumatic events. Additionally, this approach focuses on finding healing resources to help individuals feel safe again after they have experienced significant stressors.
Acceptance and Commitment Therapy:
A therapy focused on learning how to hold uncomfortable sensations, thoughts, emotions and memories. This form of therapy will also explore your values, and increase your awareness of when you are engaging in behaviors with the purpose of moving towards your values vs. trying to avoid, escape or control discomfort.
Dialectical Behavioural Therapy:
A therapy based on learning how to hold two opposite truths at the same time, as well as learning tangible skills to help support with relationship building, emotion regulation, and distress tolerance
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy:
A therapy used to help understand thoughts, emotions, and behaviours impact one another. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy also uses exposure activities to reduce symptoms of OCD and anxiety. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy may be used in my work with OCD and anxiety to help with stabilization before moving on to more deeper emotional and somatic work.
Skill Building from Cognitive Connections (Sarah Ward) and Social Thinking (Michelle Garcia Winner):
Utilized to understand and build executive functioning and social skills. Please note: my practice is grounded in the belief that the neurodiverse community is not obligated to change to fit in to a neuro-typical world. Skill building is only used when it is an agreed upon goal, with the purpose of helping provide more of a sense of stability, functionality, and awareness.
Saying Goodbye
At some point, our time together will come to an end. Some individuals are looking for short term therapy, and, when goals feel complete, we say goodbye. For others therapy is a longer process, especially when stressors are ongoing or there is a history of trauma. Deciding when to say goodbye will be a collaborative process and may include referrals to other needed resources. If at any point in the therapeutic process we do not feel your needs are being met we will create a transition plan to help connect you with other services.
